What are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a customized tooth-shaped cap placed over an existing tooth. Crowns can be made out of various materials such as metal alloy, porcelain, or composite resin. We'll model your crown to match your teeth so that it fits well within your smile. A crown restores a damaged or unhealthy tooth's natural shape, size, function, and strength.
Do I need a Dental Crown?
There are various reasons why Dr. Andrew Theurer or Dr. Cameron Call may recommend a dental crown. We recommend crowns for patients with diseased or broken teeth or those who want crowns for dental aesthetic reasons.
Dental Crowns Can Be Used To:
- Shelter a tooth with a large cavity.
- Replace a missing tooth by forming part of a dental bridge.
- Replace a missing tooth by covering a dental implant.
- Strengthen teeth that are damaged, chipped, cracked, or worn down.
- Replace parts of a tooth after a root canal or various types of tooth damage.
- Cover badly discolored teeth.
- Cover poorly shaped teeth.
What is the Crown Placement Procedure?
Placing a crown is a simple dental procedure involving around two visits to 3rd South Dental in Salt Lake City. Dr. Theurer or Dr. Latecia will first prepare the damaged tooth to receive the crown by removing the outer layer of the tooth and forming it on an excellent crown fit. We'll then take an impression to help us model the crown, ensuring it will fit snugly in your mouth and function correctly.
We'll provide a temporary crown over the prepared tooth while making the permanent crown. We'll fit the permanent crown during your second visit to our office. We'll make sure you're comfortable with how it feels when you bite down and speak. If not, we can make additional adjustments to the crown design. Once we've made the final adjustments, we'll cement the crown in place.
What Happens After the Procedure?
Once we've cemented the permanent crown into place, it is good to avoid particularly hard or sticky food for 24 hours after the procedure. The time allows the crown to set firmly to the original tooth.
After that, you can eat food and clean your teeth as usual. A dental crown does not require any special dental care or maintenance as it functions as an ordinary tooth. Of course, we recommend that you continue to follow good hygiene practices, including brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing.
How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?
On average, dental crowns last between 5 to 15 years, depending on how well you take care of your oral hygiene and the crowns. Patients can extend the lifespan of dental crowns by avoiding things like hard and sticky foods, grinding or clenching their teeth, chewing ice, biting fingernails, or using their teeth to open the packaging.
The Cost of Dental Crowns
The cost of a crown is dependent on the material we use to make it. However, a patient's general cost range for a crown is between $800 and $1,700. Dental insurance usually pays a portion of this amount. Be sure to check with your dental insurance provider.
